Laredo Independent School District has much to celebrate this month. LISD is now officially home to 18 National Blue Ribbon/Lone Star Ribbon titles in the course of nine years, a distinction which no other area school district can claim.
Hector J. Garcia Early College High School won the Blue Ribbon title in 2017 and 2023. Garcia ECHS remains the only high school in Webb County to earn this award.
LISD campuses with National Blue Ribbon/Lone Star Ribbon titles include the following:
Kawas Elementary School, 2018;
Zachry, Dovalina, Ryan, and J.C. Martin Elementary Schools, 2019;
Heights and Leyendecker Elementary Schools, 2020;
Farias Elementary School, 2023;
Kawas Elementary School, 2024,
Daiches Elementary School, D.D. Hachar Elementary School, and Macdonell Elementary School, 2025
Heights, J.C. Martin, Leyendecker, and Ryan Elementary Schools, 2026
That gives LISD a total of 18 titles.
LISD has also earned an A rating in academics and an A rating in finance! These achievements reflect our staff’s commitment to our students, responsible stewardship of district resources, and the teamwork found throughout our schools and departments. Representatives from LISD’s C&I Department and Division of Finance traveled to Edinburg where the Region One Service Center leadership presented plaques and recognized our District’s achievements. We are extremely proud of our staff and especially proud of our students. Thank you for breaking barriers for the students and families of LISD.
Arya Howard, a fourth-grade student at M.S. Ryan Elementary School, was recognized for being selected as a National Math Star. Arya was identified as a top 2% math student and has been nominated twice for National Math Stars. Over the course of this summer, she aced some rigorous assessments, became a finalist, was interviewed, and accepted into the Voyager Program. She was one of 8,700 applicants and 125 selected Voyager Stars.
LISD also recognize our Students of the Month recipients for September. A Night of Pride, Remembrance & Victory! 🏈
The Cigarroa Toros took on the Martin Tigers Friday night, September 11, in a game filled with pride, tradition, and community.
Before kickoff, the teams paid their respects to the American flag as we paused to remember and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001.
The evening also featured a special Varsity Parent Walk, giving parents the opportunity to proudly walk onto the field and introduce their sons.
Then the Toros went to work! Cigarroa scored first just minutes into the first quarter and continued to capitalize on the momentum, defeating the Martin Tigers 15–8 🏈
Congratulations, Toros! Keep breaking barriers!

During a special 9/11 remembrance ceremony, Martin High School JROTC cadets participated in the lowering of the U.S. flag to half-staff as students and staff joined local law enforcement, members of the military, and first responders in paying tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and service shown on that day.
Together, we remember the fallen, honor those who served, and recognize the brave men and women who continue to protect and serve our country and communities.
We will never forget.

There were plenty of hugs and kisses going around at Heights Elementary School as the school held its annual Grandparents Day Celebration. Height’s students and their grandparents filled the school’s gym and cafeteria as they spent quality time with each other coloring and working on crafts.
